Highlight of my weekend
Allison handed me Daphne when I was sitting on a rock on the Bullpasture and said, “She might fall asleep on you.”
I tried to hold her still, but I was pretty tired, too. And there was a flat rock a few feet away, just inches above the water.
So we both took a nap. Allison took this picture. I was half-awake when Allison took this, but I fell fully asleep a few minutes later:
Woke up with sleeping Daphne on my chest and a mountain river burbling a foot from my ears. I thought, this must be what heaven is like.

Amelia drew this picture, based on a painting from Cheri. Cheri gave us the painting last week, in honor of Grizzy.
(Sorry my pic doesn’t do the original Beatific justice)
Then I took her to the Virginia Museum of Fine Art on Sunday, with colored pencils and tablet in tow. She chose to draw in the middle of the Tiffany exhibit, which was great for me because I got to absorb the beautiful glass. Maybe this is stained glass? I didn’t ask her what it was.
It was good we took colored pencils, because that is all you can draw with there. We also had markers and a security guard told me she couldn’t use them. She had to wait to copy the colors of the VMFA logo until we got home. She really enjoyed the museum. She especially liked that she recognized many of the works of art because of a weekly visit from a VMFA educator to her classroom this past spring. A Degas ballerina and Triple Elvis might be her favorites.
She renamed Splotch #22 “Rainbow Mountain”, and enjoyed climbing to the second and third story overlooks to see which peak was the tallest. Also a Chuck Close exhibit with faces made of all sorts of methods was cool. She liked the spitbite technique (spit + paint), and a woman’s face that was woven but looked like a photo, the best.
This one cracked us up. She drew a camouflaged red man, laying on a red couch. “You have to look closely, mama”. (For reference, this is the funny picture that inspired Amelia).
Comments are off for this postJuly 4th at the lake
We went to the lake with Bebe and Grandpa for July 4th, fireworks and all. I enjoyed taking both girls out in the pedal-boat! Amelia and I went all the way around a little island nearby. Too bad their legs are too short to help with the pedaling.
They had a picnic outside…
and (uncaptured on film, unfortunately) waffles topped with ice cream cake for breakfast! It is a treat only grandmas are allowed to give to grandkids.
